Heroes of the Independence Years
Camilo Torres Torres was a very distinguished lawyer deeply involved with in fight for the Colombian independence. In 1809 he wrote the famous "Memorial de Agravios" (Grievance Memorial). He was jailed and executed as a traitor to the King of Spain in 1816. He was born in Popayán in 1766 Francisco Antonio de Ulloa This freedom fighter collaborated with Camilo Torres to achieve independence and also attended the first patriotic meeting held in Popayán. He was executed in 1816 as a traitor. De Ulloa was born in Popayán in 1783. Scientist and precursor of the Independence. Francisco Jose de Caldas (1771-1816). A naturalist, geographer and explorer, the 'Learned Caldas' is recognized as Colombia's first eminent scientist. Caldas distinguished himself in numerous fields including, geography, astronomy, natural studies, and archaeology. He participated in the Botanical Expedition of Colombia, served as director of the Astronomical Observatory of Bogota and invented the hypsometer. Founder of the first Colombian Engineering School, he also helped establish two newspapers, and wrote The Geography of the Viceroyalty of Santafe. A tireless advocate for Colombia's independence from Spain, he was executed for his efforts in 1816. He was born in the city of Popayán. Ads by Google
