Heroes of the Independence Years

Policarpa Salavarrieta -La Pola- (1795 -1817).
She devoted her life to helping the revolution to free Colombia from Spanish rule.
She was only 22 years old when she was accused of conspiracy against the Spaniards and was arrested. She was quickly executed, along with her boyfriend and other patriots. Salavarrieta was born in Guaduas.



Religious Figures


Monsignor Emilio De Brigard Ortiz (1888-1986).
Monsignor De Brigard was the Bishop of Bogota in 1944 and was appointed to Assistant Archbishop shortly before his death in 1986.
He was a spiritual guide to many Colombians and a university professor who helped the poor and sick. He was loved by all who had the honour to know him. He was born in Chía.

His Eminence Cardinal Crisanto Luque Sánchez (1889- 1959).
Assistant Bishop of Tunja (1931), the Assistant Bishop of Bogota (1932), and Bishop of Tunja (1932). He was made Cardinal in 1953. His place of birth was Tenjo.
